The Cuff Test and Review / September 2002

The Cuff is a new golf training aid that we ran across at the PGA show in Orlando earlier this year. It is promoted as a teaching, training, and exercise aid. The Cuff is a warm-up and workout weight and can be worn on the left, right, or both wrists. The manufacturer, SportSmith, claims that using The Cuff will help golfers hit more fairways and greens in regulation and hit longer and straighter drives. They also state The Cuff will improve tempo, timing and rhythm. The Cuff comes with two cuffs and is designed to be worn snuggly on the wrist so it doesn't move when swinging a club.

We had 20 golfers use The Cuff for two months according to the instructions and then we had them rate several criteria on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being best). Following is the summary of the results.

(1) Ease of use: averaged 7.4
(2) Improved my distance: averaged a respectable 7.8
(3) Improved my tempo: averaged 7.4
(4) Improved my timing: averaged 7.6
(5) Improved my game: averaged 7.8
(6) Will continue to use: scored a 7.0
(7) Overall Rating: was a solid 7.6

Following are some comments made by the golfers who tested The Cuff Training Aid:

  • "Helped me increase my swing speed"
  • "This is a good training aid to use as a regular golf exercise"
  • "Improved my swing tempo"
  • "I now use The Cuff in my warm up routine"
  • "I found it hard to use with my strong grip"

At the end of the test GolfTest USA saw that younger and stronger players had better results with The Cuff. ((SportSmith has stated that they will be releasing variable weights for seniors, women and children in the near future.)) Some of the testers were not able to adjust The Cuff so that it felt comfortable. We think that if The Cuff was made of a softer and more flexible material it might be easier for some golfers to use. ((The manufacturer has stated that with use, the internal band will conform to the wearer's wrist and steadily becomes more comfortable.)) The Cuff is not for everyone but there was a core of testers who felt it really improved their game.

GolfTest USA gives The Cuff a Birdie rating.
