Club Set and Fitting System Review / February 2009
Last
year GolfTest USA was retained by ProPlay to test a new
glove and grip fitting system that was designed to help
golfers consistently grip the club correctly. The results
of that test clearly demonstrated that the majority of golfers
improved their golf scores as the direct result of having
the correct grip on each swing of the club. Subsequently
ProPlay came back to us to have us test their new golf clubs
that incorporated the ProPlay Fitting System. They also
produced an instructional DVD that showed golfers how to
have the correct grip, address the ball and develop the
proper swing.
We were told
by ProPlay that the golf club set took the advantages of
the ProPlay Fitting System and added some additional features
to help all golfers and especially new golfers learn how
to play golf quicker and with less frustration.
Testing Protocol:
In setting up the protocol for the test we decided to have
3 groups.
Group A consisted
of 10 new, beginner golfers who used a ProPlay starter club
set that consisted of the following clubs: A 460cc driver,
a “3” hybrid club, the 5, 7, 9 and PW irons
and a generic putter. Each tester was custom fit to the
correct size golf glove and the clubs had the corresponding
colored coded grips matched to their glove size. Each club
has a white alignment mark on the head which assists the
golfer to assure that they are properly swinging the club
on line and on plane. A ProPlay instruction DVD was provided
and they were instructed to view it and follow the directions
to properly grip the club, address the ball and swing the
club. The DVD is very basic and does not fill the golfers
with too much technical information which could tend to
confuse the testers with more information than they could
reasonably process.
Group B also
consisted of 10 new, beginner golfers who were provided
with a generic set of golf clubs. They were instructed to
practice at least three times a week and after a month play
one or two rounds of golf. They were told not to get any
outside instruction or assistance. We wanted to see how
they would progress on their own.
Group C consisted
of 15 high handicap golfers who indicated they wanted to
try and improve their golf game. Each tester was custom
fitted with a ProPlay glove and a 6 iron with the corresponding
color coded grip. They also received the same ProPlay instruction
DVD as Group A and were directed to practice with the 6
iron and view the DVD as often as necessary to insure they
were following the directions for working on their grip,
address and swing properly. At the end of the month we had
them play a couple of rounds of golf and then evaluate how
much if any had they improved.
GolfTest
USA has compiled the results from each group. Below are
the findings on what we feel they represent.

Test
Methodology: GolfTest USA would like you practice
and play with this set of ProPlay golf clubs. We ask that
you try your best to practice at least 3 times a week over
the next month. Try to work on all aspects of your game.
We want you to watch and refer back to the ProPlay DVD as
often as needed so that you are familiar with the instructions
and pointers regarding how to properly grip the club and
work on your swing. We would prefer that you do NOT get
any outside instruction or advice. This test is being conducted
to see if new and beginner golfers can benefit from the
use of the ProPlay Fitting System and also see if being
exposed to the basics of the golf swing can help to reduce
the frustrations and learning curve for a novice golfer.
Please review the questions below and keep them in mind
while practicing and playing so that at the end of the test
you will be able to complete this evaluation form in a fair
and unbiased manner. If at any point during the test you
have any questions please contact Wayne at GolfTest USA
at 393-8624. Around November 20th we ask that you plan to
play at least one round of golf or maybe two if you can
work it into your schedule. Keep close track of your score
and try to count all strokes. We will not release your score
to anyone so don’t worry about it.

Comments:
My husband was
amazed at some of the great shots I hit and now I can play
with the girls. It was actually more fun than I expected.
The grip set up helped me grip the club the same way every
time so it took those errors out of the equation.
The set was great.
Besides the help with the grip, I liked how the club was
heavier than a normal club. I think this helped me control
my swing. I hit a lot of good shots. My bad shots were due
to my form.
Well, I started
playing poorly but I now have been introduced to the correct
way so I will continue to play and try to improve. But I
might go get some instruction with a pro.
At first the
set was hard to use but got way better and easier to use
as I continued to use it.
Thanks for the opportunity to participate.
I was actually
complimented by another golfer on my correct hand grip.
Summary
of Group A Testers
GolfTest
USA looked at the ratings from all the questions and we
can clearly draw the conclusion that the ProPlay Club set
helped all the testers learn to play golf quicker, easier
and with less frustration then they would have done without
the benefits the ProPlay clubs, glove, grip and DVD. Golf
is one of the most difficult of all sports to learn and
to play consistently. The ProPlay set provides the essential
components needed to help beginners learn to play golf quickly,
easily and with less frustration. Most of the testers said
they had fun learning and that made them want to practice
more and they enjoyed the experience.
Jack Nicklaus recently spoke at a First Tee Clinic regarding
learning how to play golf. He was quoted in the USA TODAY
as follows: “I try to do everything as natural as
possible,” he told the students. “The grip,”
he added, “is the most important thing in the golf
swing. If you have a good grip, your can play golf.”
The ProPlay Glove and Grip Fitting System lay the foundation
to develop the proper golf swing. By using the ProPlay golf
club set and the instruction DVD any new golfer has a real
chance to learn the game quicker and with less frustration
than any other process we have seen in all our years of
testing golf products.

Comments:
Enjoyed
playing with the clubs but game is about the same.
Enjoyed
the clubs and my game improved.
Fun
clubs. 7 iron felt comfortable, putter improved my aim and
had good balance. The woods also had good balance.
Really
liked the clubs and found the driver and hybrid two of my
best shots.
I liked
the clubs and found myself improving over the test period.
I had
more consistency in my shots. The hybrid was excellent.
I experienced
straight drives with this set of clubs. Putter was my friend.
I enjoyed
playing with the clubs. No change in strokes.
Summary
of Group B Testers
The
conclusion we can draw from the testers who did not have
any instruction or advice is that the test results show
it is extremely important to have a good quality set of
clubs and have some basic instructions showing a new golfer
how to grip the club, address the ball and swing the club.
Without these basic skills many golfers will probably experience
many years of frustration trying to improve. Once a golfer
has the basics mastered it is then easier to make improvements
to other parts of their game.

Most of the testers had some positive results from
using the ProPlay 6 iron.
15: Taking into account all factors that are important
to you about a golf club how would you rate the ProPlay
6 iron “overall”:
The testers gave the ProPlay 6 iron a very positive
overall rating.
Please
write in your answers to the following questions.
16:
What did you like best about the ProPlay 6 iron?
The
grip. It did help improve my game
The
line on the club was a great visual clue for me to remind
me of how to swing the club. The grip really helped.
Balance,
club head design, grip.
Easy
alignment.
Easy
to use to align correctly for a proper grip and addressing
the ball.
The
extra weight increased distance 30% over my other irons.
Grip
position, loft, grip, line-up mark on head
Showing
correct placement of grip
Grip
match to the glove helps with all club.
17: Is there anything you did NOT like about the
ProPlay 6 iron?
I tended
to take huge divots half the time.
Shaft
1 ½ longer, head heavy, grip too small in diameter.
Hard
to hit at first.
18: Is there anything you would change about the
ProPlay 6 iron?
Actually
I would change the glove to be mesh on top as I felt it
was too confining and hot. I can’t normally play with
a glove and I like the ones you can still see through them.
No,
but if I had a 3 iron and an 8 iron with the same weight,
I would not need all my clubs.
Comments:
I would
like to try a full set of ProPlay clubs.
I like
the glove very much. It helped me with my other clubs to
grip them properly.
I really
enjoyed this test and would be interested in trying the
whole set. Thank you for this opportunity!
I seldom
use my 6 iron. I used this in games where usually I would
use a 4 or 5 iron and made better shots. It is excellent
in short off the green chips also.
Overall,
the DVD, glove and iron helped me with set up and concentration
as my main problem is looking up and moving my head. Is
the 6 iron the only club in the ProPlay series? I have been
able to hit my 5 hybrid better since starting with the ProPlay.
Thank you for this opportunity. I would like to continue
with the club and see if more practice will promote more
improvement.
Summary of Group C Testers
The
test results from Group C indicates that the majority of
golfers will be able to improve their game by watching the
ProPlay DVD and following the instructions to properly grip
the club. They will also be able to improve their address
and swing the club on the proper plane and with better tempo.
Not all of the testers benefited because of flaws that they
have in their grip and swing that they may not have been
able to eliminate after so many years of bad swing habits.
These golfers could benefit by continuing to work on the
tips in the DVD and also getting lessons from a golf instructor
working in conjunction with the basics taught in the DVD.
The previous test we conducted for ProPlay showed that golf
instructors were able to use the ProPlay Glove and Grip
Fitting System to show their students the proper grip and
then focus on other aspects of the swing resulting in quicker
progress for their students.

18: Is there anything you did NOT like about the
ProPlay set?
It
took me a while to line up horizontal on back swing and
follow thru.
19:
Is there anything you would change about the ProPlay set?
I think
I would like a larger grip too help my arthritis.
20:
What differences did you find between learning to play golf
with a generic set and no instruction and now using the
ProPlay set and having the benefit of watching a DVD showing
how to properly grip, address and swing the club?
What
a world of difference. The DVD showed me how to line up
the ball/glove/grip correctly.
When
swinging the club the target line on the head help to line
up my shot to the hole—it also helped to align my
swing by looking at the club head on my backswing.
With
the generic set and no instructions I just bumbled along
as usual. With ProPlay I felt more growing confidence and
obvious improvement.
It helped
to lower my golf scores.
The
video trumps trying to figure out the grip and addressing
the ball all by yourself. Because the grip is so important
I can’t say enough good things about their matching
glove and grip.
I now
grip the clubs more consistently each time and that helps
me to be more consistent in my swing as well. I also like
the feel of the clubs and the thicker heads on the irons.
General
Comments:
DVD
Instruction contradiction: At first the DVD said to grip
club then address ball—then later it said to first
address ball then grip club. I believe grip and then address
is the right way. Also perhaps the DVD should have addressed
foot placement with a particular club.
I enjoyed
participating in this golf test and learning to play the
game of golf. Thanks.
I liked
watching the DVD to learn how to grip the club. Wayne was
very helpful too. I really enjoyed the experience.
I would
recommend this to all new golfers especially women who are
counting on spouse showing them how to play. You can learn
at your own timetable under less pressure.
Thank
you for this opportunity. Because of this I now feel more
confident. I am improving with each round and can hardly
wait for the next time.
Final Summary for Test Group D.
The
results of this portion of the test reconfirms that the
ProPlay Fitting System and Club Set will help the vast majority
of beginner golfers learn the game quicker and more easily
than just trying to learn on their own. Learning to play
golf with the ProPlay Fitting System and Club Set will assuredly
shorten a golfer’s learning curve and result in far
more enjoyment playing golf. Golfers who have been playing
the game for a while will also benefit greatly because they
will be able to correct bad habits they have developed over
the years in an easy and understandable format. They will
be able to continue to improve over the long term without
having to get lessons to correct flaws they may develop
from time to time.
All the testing we have done over the past year on ProPlay
clearly shows that golfers who want to learn golf and those
who want to improve will benefit from using the ProPlay
Fitting System and Clubs.
Final Summary for the ProPlay Golf Club Set
GolfTest
USA has been able to clearly determine that the ProPlay
Golf Club Set would be a huge asset to any person who has
decided to take up the game of golf. We have tested many
training aids and golf improvement products over the past
ten years and we have never seen a product like the ProPlay
Golf Club Set that brings together all the necessary ingredients
a new golfer needs to learn the game. As stated earlier
golf can be a very frustrating sport to learn and many golfers
have given up the game because they have not been able to
improve. By starting to learn the game using the ProPlay
set the beginner has a much better “chance”
of learning to play golf quicker and enjoy the game. By
using the ProPlay set a new golfer will not have to unlearn
bad habits or improper techniques and thus should have more
fun which is what many recreational golfers want from the
game.
With
the current declining population of golfers we feel the
ProPlay Golf Club Set will help many new golfers learn the
game and continue to enjoy playing which can only improve
the long term health of the game.
GolfTest
USA is very pleased to award the ProPlay Golf Club Set our
GolfTest USA “Seal of Excellence”. We strongly
endorse the ProPlay Golf Club Set to all new golfers and
to any golfer who wants to improve their game.
