Martini Golf Tee Test / March 2012

GolfTest USA goes to the PGA Golf Show every year in Orlando. At the 2011 show we were given some samples of a relatively new tee called the Martini Tee. We were intrigued by the name of the tee and when the inventor of the Martini Tee explained to us that he felt the tee looked like the top of a martini glass we understood completely. When we arrived back in Arizona we passed out some of the samples to several of the volunteers who participate in our testing from time to time. Within a short time we started getting calls from the volunteers wanting to know where they could get more because many of their golf buddies wanted to try them.Last summer we decided to do a controlled study of some of the new “performance” tees on the market. We wanted to see if there was a difference in several criteria that we felt were important when using these tees. We contacted Martini Tees and they agreed to participate. We then developed the testing methodology and protocol and set out to find 25 volunteers to participate in the test.

We compared the Martini Tee to three other top performance tees and also a standard 2 3/4 inch wood tee to serve as a reference point. In this report the other tees in the test shall be referred to as follows: Tee E, Tee T, Tee Z and the wood tee as Tee W.

Test Part A

In this portion of the test 25 golfers hit 10 shots each using each of the 5 tees in the test. The makeup of the 25 golfers who participated in the test was as follows: 10 testers who had established handicaps from 0 to 10 and 15 testers whose established handicaps ranged from 11 to 20. The sequence in which each of the 5 tees was hit was changed and rotated to as not to give an unfair advantage to any one tee. The number of shots was also limited to 5 recorded shots during each session and then the testers would move to another tee until each tester had hit the required 10 shots using each tee. Each shot was recorded using the FlightScope Prime launch monitor. Criterion measured during the test was carry distance, total distance, lateral dispersion and smash factor. To insure additional controlled conditions and consistency GolfTest USA had each tester use the same model driver. GolfTest USA picked the new Williams FW32 driver as the driver that was used by each tester. Each tester was fitted with the proper flex and loft. The average results that were compiled are listed below.

The Tee M was very close to Tee Z in all the ratings from an objective standpoint. Also, both the Tee Z and Tee M were superior in the important Smash Factor rating. The Tee E rated high in the Dispersion rating. The high Average Smash Factor for both the Tee Z and the Tee M directly correlate to the longer distance both tees recorded compared to the other three tees in the test.

Test Part B

In this portion of the test the same 25 golfers played one round with each of the tees in the test. Once the round was complete for each tee they immediately evaluated several criteria so that how they performed was still fresh in their minds. They were asked to rate each question on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being best. The averages of all the responses are shown below.

Summary Overview

Based on the objective results of this test in Part A it is clear that the Martini Tee performed at a high level. In Part B of the test the results compiled were subjective based on the evaluations the testers made while playing rounds of golf with each tee. Golfers can have good and bad days on the course so the average totals tend to be a little more spread out across the range of a standard bell curve. Having said that the ratings in this part of test do offer a good insight into how the testers felt about each of the criteria they evaluated. It is important to note that the testers rated the Martini Tee about 10 to 20% higher than the other tees in most of the criteria. Their perception was that the Martini Tee performed at an extremely high level in all of the criteria they evaluated. Our evaluation of the results of this test leads us to conclude that the Martini Tee is very close to the perfect tee. The durability is phenomenal and older golfers love how easy it is to place the ball on the tee. The Martini Tee comes in several very cool colors and the ladies love the pink ones. Many of the testers raved about the Martini Tee and anecdotally said they would definitely continue to use the Martini Tee.

We are also awarding the Martini Tee our 5 Star rating which is based on the results achieved in this test. Only a very few select golf products we test can lay claim to our 5 Star rating. We are confident that golfers who use the Martini Tee will find that they are using a golf product that will live up to the claims made by Martini Golf and that the Martini Tee will help golfers hit longer and straighter drives.
