REVIEW:
Seven Canyons is located in Sedona, Arizona. Earlier in
2003 USA Today ran an article in their weekend news magazine
in which they picked the 10 most beautiful places in America.
Guess whom they picked # 1. Yep, it was Sedona, Arizona.
And with good reason. Sedona is located at the western edge
of the Colorado plateau at 4,500 feet above sea level. The
Grand Canyon is a short 2-hour drive to the north. Sedona
has mild weather year round and is surrounded by national
forest land. Everywhere you turn you are struck by the natural
beauty of the red rock sandstone formations. It is truly
a magical place.
Seven Canyons was designed by Tom Weiskopf and was completed
in 2002. Tom is one of the top course designers in the world
and while we have not spoken to him directly we feel confident
that he would say that Seven Canyons is easily his best
design. Tom said, “When I first saw the property it
took my breath away.” Internationally known photographer
Tony Roberts states, “Seven Canyons is the most beautiful
golf course in the world”. The land that was used
for Seven Canyons had been land that was originally homesteaded
over a hundred years ago. The Homestead Act back in the
late 1800’s allowed people to stake a claim to 160
acres and if they lived on it for 5 years and improved the
land by farming or ranching they were able to receive a
deed to the property. The golf course is completely surrounded
by national forest and will stay in its natural state for
the foreseeable future.
Seven Canyons is open to play by invitation only and they
have a limited number of memberships available. The Golf
Test USA staff was fortunate enough to by invited to play
and we jumped at the chance. Playing a round of golf at
Seven Canyons is much more than a day of golf. It is an
experience that is enjoyed even before you arrive, as the
drive out to the course is a geography lesson that takes
you back in time 350 million years as you view much of the
layers of sand stone that has eroded away.
The staff was extremely accommodating from the moment we
arrived. Before we began play we were assigned a caddy for
our foursome. Carts are not allowed out on the course so
our caddy went ahead of us to act as spotter out on the
fairway as we hit our drives. He kept us apprised of the
distances we had for our next shots and provided us with
valuable local knowledge throughout the round. The course
was in immaculate condition and each hole was approached
with eager anticipation of our next golf challenge and the
beautiful views that awaited us. The greens were extremely
quick and undulating. We were all pleased whenever we were
able escape with just 2 putting the hole. At several tee
boxes along the way there were coolers filled with cold
sodas, gator aide, candy bars and snacks in the event we
needed to cool off or get some instant energy. Even though
we didn’t play as well as we would have liked we all
know that this was one day of golf that we would never forget.
John Erickson is the new General Manager at Seven Canyons
and Larry Murphy has just arrived as the Director of Golf.
The staff at Golf Test USA wants to thank John, Larry and
the rest of the Seven Canyons staff for what was one of
the most memorable days we have ever had on a golf course.
A driving range is in the plans and should be completed
within the year.
RATING:
GolfTest USA recommends Seven Canyons as
